The Tomb of the Diver, fresco, 480 - 470 BC Paestum, Archaeological Museum.
The image of the diver constitutes the internal decoration of the roofing slab of a tomb found near Paestum. The man in the act of diving into a stream probably symbolizes the transition from life to death. The other four internal walls are decorated with banquet scenes. It is one of the most significant and best preserved examples of Greek pictorial decoration, widespread in southern Italy and Etruria. The compositional scheme consists of figured friezes arranged between two ornamental bands and subjects depicting games, battles, dances, funeral rites, banquets. Paestum was founded by the Greek colonists in the 7th century BC; it had a very long period of prosperity even during the Roman Empire. It was abandoned in the 5thth century AD.
