Marble bust of the Roman God Mercury (Hermes, for the Greeks).

The sculpture is a reproduction of the God Mercury, with helmet and wings, by the famous Italian sculptor Antonio Canova (1757-1822). Mercury is a Roman god, interpreter and messenger of the gods, protector of travellers, commerce and eloquence. The Romans adopted it from the Greek god Hermes.
