Plate in Terracotta of Medusa Gorgon in Running,  inspired by the slab from the sanctuary of Athena, Syracuse, late 7th century BC, Archaeological Museum, Syracuse.

The Medusa Gorgon was a figure from mythology Greek  monstrous-looking with snakes for hair, who had the power to petrify anyone who looked into her eyes. Medusa was linked to the myth of Perseus who managed to kill her by cutting off her head as he was the only one of the Gorgons to be mortal.

The Gorgons, together with the Fauns and Sileni, used as external subjects of their homes by the Greeks and Romans to protect the doors, frightening malevolent entities thanks to their monstrous features, often showing their tongue as an expression of challenge.
