Description

Bodies Van Wittel. Reproduction of the work Posillipo with the Palazzo Donn'Anna , by Gaspar Van Wittel (1653 - 1736) also known as Gaspare Vanvitelli, conserved at the Comption Verney.

The Dutch artist, father of Luigi Vanvitelli (the architect who designed the Royal Palace of Caserta), moved to Naples in 1674. He was the forerunner of 18th-century landscape painting, which mainly placed the representation of natural landscapes and the evolution of cities at the center of its existence. The attention to the smallest details caused him a vision problem but at the same time he became one of the most coveted painters by noble families.

Van Wittel, as well as Canaletto, were artists in great demand for various reasons: for their objectivity of the image which made inroads among intellectuals who wanted a reproduction of landscapes seen, but also among people who, unable to afford to travel, wanted a representation of the most famous places.
