Ring with Ancient Coin in silver, copy of the ancient denarius. Depicts the emperor romano . Hand engraving.
In ancient Rome, coins were imbued with meaning. In addition to being used as a form of exchange, they were seen as apotropaic objects: that is, they served to ward off bad luck. From archaeological finds, we can deduce that they were used as jewels and amulets, often engraved inside rings or bracelets. Since the coin had intrinsic value (it was actually gold or silver), using them as jewelry also served as a way to hoard a valuable asset.
