The Rape of the Sabine Women is reproduction in Carrara marble of the famous work by Giambologna, today exhibited in the Loggia dei Lanzi, in Florence.

This sculpture of the rape of the Sabine women represents one of the best-known episodes of ancient Roman history: the scene of the historic abduction of the Sabine women by the Romans. It is made up of a tangle of figures strong> which, with great tension, seem to climb upwards on top of each other.

The sculptural group, created with great technical skill, expresses the entire drama of the kidnapping: from the shock of the elderly father Sabinus for his daughter, from the extreme tension of the young Roman soldier, up to the top of this tower of bodies, culminating in desperation of the girl who, like many of her sisters, was unable to free herself from the young man's hold.

From this work of art emerge the intensity, the force of the moment and the complexity of human emotions.

Historical Curiosities

After founding Rome, Romulus took care of fortifying it and in a short time it became so powerful that it could compete with all its neighbors. Romulus then turned to nearby populations to form alliances and obtain women with whom to populate the newborn city. However, no people responded to his appeal, and he decided to perpetuate his purpose through deception: he instituted solemn games called Consualia to which he invited neighboring peoples. During the game, at a pre-arranged signal, the Roman soldiers drew their weapons and took the unmarried women hostage, allowing the rest of their people to escape.

Maintenance

To best preserve the work, we recommend cleaning it with a soft, dry cloth. In case of dust, use warm water and soap, but it is important to dry the surface carefully after washing it to avoid the formation of stains and water marks. Absolutely avoid aggressive chemical detergents that could ruin the patina.
