Description

Narcissus, bronze statue with the lost wax technique. Reproduction of the Hellenistic statue found in Pompeii in 1862 preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.

The myth of Narcissus exists in many versions, one of which narrated by Ovid in Metamorphosis. In his version, the young man rejects several suitors in love with his beauty, including the nymph Eco whom he dismissed. The young girl, taken with displeasure, died slowly and just her voice remained. To punish him, the goddess Nemesis let her fall in love with her own image when he saw it in a puddle of water. Once aware of the fact that he could not be reciprocated, the young man let himself die transforming himself into the white flower that takes his name.

There sculpture it was also taken up by Vincenzo Gemito in 1885 who was inspired by the original work found in what was called La casa di Narciso.
