This plaque with the bas-relief of the Sea Triton is a reproduction in Carrara marble made by means of a cast taken from the original, preserved in the Vatican Museums of Rome. The Triton is a sea deity of Greek mythology, son (and companion) of the sea god Poseidon and the nymph Amphitrite. Usually it was represented as half man, in the upper part of the body, and half fish, in the lower part. 

The Triton has a very important role in maritime culture, it symbolizes the power of the oceans and the protection of sailors. He is often depicted with a shell used as a trumpet to calm the waters or invoke storms.

Historical Curiosities

Representations of Triton were very common in ancient Greece and Rome, not only in temples and palaces, but also in baths and gardens. He was often used in fountains as a symbol of the calming and protective power of water. An iconic example is the Triton Fountain, sculpted by the famous Baroque artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1642, which still adorns Piazza Barberini in Rome today.

The figure of the Triton was also a source of inspiration for numerous Renaissance artists, a sign of the continuous admiration for this mythological symbol. Famous in Greek mythology also because he helped Jason and the Argonauts to find the right route to follow to return home.
